Procedure:
- Fit a balloon to the mouth of glass bottle.
- Place the bottle in a pan of water and heat it.
- The balloon will get inflated as the air inside the bottle becomes warm and expands.
- Take the bottle out of the pan and allow it to cool. The balloon will get deflated as the air inside the bottle contracts.
Conclusion: - As the air inside the balloon heats up it starts to expand. The molecules begin to move faster and further apart from each other. This is what makes the balloon stretch. There is still the same amount of air inside the balloon and bottle; it has just expanded as it heats up.
Concept used in Daily life:
- Balloons and tires burst if you blow them up too much.
- Deodorant spray cans carry warning signs to tell you not to leave them in the sunshine. If they get too hot they explode.
- Hot air balloons.
