Prior to this lesson students would have had discussed some of Earth’s landforms and the Causes to Changes to Earth’s landforms. Students would have a developed vocabulary identifying the causes of erosion, weathering and deposition and how water, wind, ice and plants all cause changes to Earth’s landforms. Students should understand cause and effect relationships.
Vocabulary: Volcano, Eruption, lava, magma, plate, earthquake, cause, effect
Students should be able to identify the positive effects of a volcanic eruption. Students should be able to explain how a model of a volcano can facilitate their understanding of the effects of the volcanic eruption.
Students will have a developed science vocabulary when discussing the effects of a volcano.
Students would benefit from clear cooperative learning procedures.
Students would benefit from clear Science procedure expectations, science notebook set-up (observer's notebook), rules of accountable talk.
Teacher should read all articles prior to distributing them to students.
Science Experiment Materials:
T ends this segment by asking students if they think that a volcano eruption would cause any positive effects. (You can also ask students to discuss this in group so that you can gauge if the students believe there are any positive effects
Science Experiment Procedure:
Students should focus on these questions as they conduct this experiment:
Name- Activity: Level 1 or At risk students *Differentiated by Content, Process, and Language (Bilingual Classes: Can use Spanish articles and spanish graphic organizers)
Students will complete a Graphic Organizer identifying the positive effects of a volcanic eruption. Students will read a bulleted article and highlight the positive effects of an active volcano. Students will then complete the graphic organizer and share within their group. Whole Class Share
Name- Activity: Level 2 students *Differentiated by Content, Process, and Language (Bilingual Classes: Can use Spanish articles and Spanish graphic organizers)
Students will complete a Graphic Organizer identifying the positive effects of a volcanic eruption. Students will read a passage in which information is identified and discussed as to how Volcano eruptions help the land, farmers, and the environment. Students will complete a Cause and Effect Graphic Organizer. Whole Class Share.
Name- Activity: Levels 3 and 4 students *Differentiated by Content
Students will read various articles informing them of the pros and cons of volcanic eruptions. Students will then complete a graphic organizer.
Extension Activity: Students will apply the information gathered in their graphic organizers during their Writer’s Workshop to write a Cause and Effect Paragraph.
